This is a mod sent in by Yitah W. In his
own words:
Got my paws on a UV ED and started playing
with it - threw it in a AA Mini Maglight with Lithium
AA's
Worked ok.
Next, raided the battery recycle bins at
the office for used cordless phone batteries. These are
300 to 350 mah Nicad 2/3 AA. How big is that? Well, they're
about 2/3 the length of a standard AA battery.
Hmmmm.
If I take 3, that will be about the length
of 2 AA's, right?
What's Nicad voltage again? Oh yeah, 1.2v.
3x1.2 = 3.6, perfect!
When disassembling the pack DO NOT REMOVE
THE STAINLESS STEEL TIE STRAPS COMPLETELY. Leave them
on the positive terminals - that way you have something
to form into a makeshift battery button - othewise they
won't make good contact with each other, etc.
Had to make dowel fake battery so I could
fit these in my regular charger. As it turns out, 2/3
is an approximation - they're really a little bit shorter,
so out comes the dowel and zip, zip, another adapter.
The LED revision is pretty straightforward.
It works GREAT, No mods to the flashlight
itself, 300 mah / ~30 ma = 10 hour life.
Haven't put the white LED in it yet - I
plan to see how many I can pack into the 2 x AA maglight
head.
MORE MOD IDEAS::
2xAA Mini Maglite? Turns out that there
are some very odd batteries available.
1/2 AA 3.6V Lithium http://www.batterymart.com/battery/BAT-TL5101-S.html
exactly half the length of a standard AA
AA 3V Lithium: http://www.batterymart.com/battery.mv?p=BAT-TL5104-S
With 4 of the first or 2 of the second,
you'd have either 14.4 or 7.2 volts - more than enough
to drive a series of 2 or 4 white LED's!!!!!!
